the keepers

Iba wrote in her blog the other day that she watched The Keepers so I thought I’d see what that was about.

*SPOILER ALERT*. Don’t read any further, unless you DGAF.

The keepers on Netflix had me shooketh. Watching it, I felt the faith in both the Catholic Church and the American government crumble (as if it couldn’t get any worse than it already has). The documentary exposes not only the horrifying abuse of children by priests but also the deliberate efforts to shuffle them around, protect them from consequences, and bury the truth. The cover-ups, the silence, and the blatant disregard for children’s lives are beyond appalling.

What struck me was the chokehold that the Catholic archdiocese had on government officials, police investigators, and victims to prevent them from speaking their truth for so long. It wasn’t just institutional, it was systemic. It wasn’t just a failure of morality but an active betrayal of justice.

And at the center of it all remains the haunting mystery of Sister Cathy Cesnik’s death. No one knows for certain who killed her. There were so many suspects, twists, and turns in this but all of these roads lead back to the Catholic Church. Her murder hangs like a shadow over everything, a stark reminder of the lengths people may have taken to silence someone who dared to stand up for the vulnerable.

I feel for the survivors who endured years of fear, shame, and unimaginable trauma. To think of the childhoods stolen, the trust shattered, and the lives forever altered makes me angry. Yet, in their courage to come forward after all those years, there is a flicker of hope.

This story of sister Kathy looks like tangled with many factors. There are some hidden truths of this institution indeed. We never know the whole story behind.

Praying for those who are abused.

Thank you for sharing, Iba and Rojie.

This is like the current administration calling the epstien crimes a hoax to play the CYA game and in turn not giving one shit about the victims

I still love the pomp and circumstance of the mass- but cannot stomach associating myself with the church.

They sent one of those priests to my high school. That fact came out YEARS later, and we all had a “that explains so much” moment. Even not knowing at the time, he creeped us all out. He would watch us with a predatory stare as he smoked.

Damn… they shouldn’t bounce the dirty priests like that around, specially when they have authority over children

You have to excise the cancer, not feed it.
