LINK: the keepers
Iba wrote in her blog the other day that she watched The Keepers so I thought I’d see what that was about.
*SPOILER ALERT*. Don’t read any further, unless you DGAF.
The keepers on Netflix had me shooketh. Watching it, I felt the faith in both the Catholic Church and the American government crumble (as if it couldn’t get any worse than it already has). The documentary exposes not only the horrifying abuse of children by priests but also the deliberate efforts to shuffle them around, protect them from consequences, and bury the truth. The cover-ups, the silence, and the blatant disregard for children’s lives are beyond appalling.
What struck me was the chokehold that the Catholic archdiocese had on government officials, police investigators, and victims to prevent them from speaking their truth for so long. It wasn’t just institutional, it was systemic. It wasn’t just a failure of morality but an active betrayal of justice.
And at the center of it all remains the haunting mystery of Sister Cathy Cesnik’s death. No one knows for certain who killed her. There were so many suspects, twists, and turns in this but all of these roads lead back to the Catholic Church. Her murder hangs like a shadow over everything, a stark reminder of the lengths people may have taken to silence someone who dared to stand up for the vulnerable.
I feel for the survivors who endured years of fear, shame, and unimaginable trauma. To think of the childhoods stolen, the trust shattered, and the lives forever altered makes me angry. Yet, in their courage to come forward after all those years, there is a flicker of hope.
