How do I respond to compliments?

Prompt snagged from: Day One

Not well, honestly. Compliments make me uncomfortable—not because I don’t appreciate them, but because I’m not used to hearing them. Growing up, the message was always: Do more. Be better.

If I came home with a 99% on a test, instead of hearing “Good job,” I’d get, “Why not 100?” Praise wasn’t something freely given, it was reserved for perfection, and even then, it felt like a brief pit stop on the way to the next expectation.

As an adult, when someone compliments me—whether it’s about my work, my appearance, or anything else—I tend to get shy and turn red. I’ll say “thank you” out of politeness, and then quickly change the subject. I’ve been conditioned to deflect rather than receive.

Compliment is good, and some people mean it. It’s good to accept the gift, but for me, it depends if I believe it or not.

I’m the same. Very self-conscious and want it over as quickly as possible. Only learned a few years ago to say thank you.

      I wonder why that is..

I dunno. It’s weird. I crave the recognition but hate the attention. People make no sense…

Do you. If the complimenter is sincere they just want you to know that they noticed

I think it’s because you’re probably a very hard worker and motivated. When people are like that, they assume that (whatever they’re being complimented on) is expected. The reality is, you deserve the compliment, as others can clearly see. Does this make sense?

I think so. I just feel like I’m doing my job, nothing more and nothing less
