You used to call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love Call me on my cell phone Late night when you need my love And I know when that hotline bling That can only mean one thingHow do I respond to compliments?
Prompt snagged from: Day One
Not well, honestly. Compliments make me uncomfortable—not because I don’t appreciate them, but because I’m not used to hearing them. Growing up, the message was always: Do more. Be better.
If I came home with a 99% on a test, instead of hearing “Good job,” I’d get, “Why not 100?” Praise wasn’t something freely given, it was reserved for perfection, and even then, it felt like a brief pit stop on the way to the next expectation.
As an adult, when someone compliments me—whether it’s about my work, my appearance, or anything else—I tend to get shy and turn red. I’ll say “thank you” out of politeness, and then quickly change the subject. I’ve been conditioned to deflect rather than receive.
