I’m the bad guy
I like it when you take control
Even if you know that you don’t
Own me,
I’ll let you play the role
I’ll be your animal
Is prom worth it?
Prompt snagged from: The NY Times
For me? Yeah. It was absolutely worth it. Prom and homecoming are both wildly overrated and expensive. And yet… I went to both sophomore year. And not gonna lie, I had the time of my life—even though it almost sparked WW3 in my house.
My mom was dead set against me going to prom. But I begged my dad to intervene, and after what felt like endless arguing, he finally said yes—with two conditions:
- I had to be home by midnight.
- My parents weren’t going to buy me a dress.
That win came at a cost. My mom didn’t speak to me for a month because my dad overrode her. Petty? Absolutely. But I was still going to prom. I didn’t give a damn.
I borrowed a dress from my cousin, did my own hair and makeup (and let me tell you—if I’m bad at makeup now, you can only imagine what I looked like then. I didn’t have a boutonniere for my date, which I still feel a little guilty about because he looked so good in a suit.
My mom refused to come out of her room to greet Christian when he arrived. Like I said—petty with a capital P.
But none of that mattered when Christian pulled up in his dad’s car. This was the first time I got to go anywhere with him with my parents’ knowledge. Before that, it was all sneaking out in the middle of the night or sneaking him in. It was a whole thing.
We got to prom, danced for about an hour, and then left to go make out at the beach like the messy, hormonal teenagers we were. It was one unforgettable night.
No pictures like the other kids, because my parents disapproved. But I don’t need them. I’ve got the memories burned into my long-term memory like a highlight reel I still revisit from time to time.
So, was prom worth it?
Absolutely.
