I’d love to read your responses
A couple of days before my dental appointment, my temporary crown popped off while I was flossing my teeth. FML. I rinsed out the crown, brushed my mouth, and placed it back in—luckily it seemed to have stayed there until my appointment. This meant that I wasn’t going to floss around that tooth. Gross.
So, the day begins…
I didn’t get much sleep the night before only because I had an exorbitant amount of work I had to do. I think I slept about two hours before I had to get up at 0515 and get ready to go to Lourdes’ home.
Lexi wasn’t able to get the day off and she didn’t want to call out sick because she really is in dire straits right now after her husband divorced her and left her with basically nothing and is raising three kids on her own. I’ll just say this. He’s a total douche.
I wanted to give Lourdes a token of appreciation for driving and taking me to all these places in TJ with her. She’s also been paying for my meals, drinks, and medical pass even though I told her that I was paying, she wouldn’t take my money. I know it’s exhausting going to places with others but I really do enjoy my time with her. I have known her for many years, we were a very tight group when we worked together. Those were such happy times, but then we all went our separate ways.

I saw her eyeing this Sanrio water spinning car with LED lights, when we were at Costco in Tijuana. It was pretty big and weighed about 9 pounds. I didn’t have time to go to the store so I ordered it online and had it mailed to my house, that way I could surprise her with it in person.
Her eyes lit up and she started sobbing when I gave it to her. She loves Hello Kitty more than anyone I know. She said that it was inspiring her to decorate her home for Christmas, which she hasn’t celebrated since her mom passed away three years ago.
Good thing I ordered it when I did because they’re sold out at Costco and Walmart is selling it for $179.50 which is way more than what I spent. That’s wild to me.
Anyway, I digress.
We made it across the border by 0730 and she parked her car in the usual lot. I watched her put on makeup while I applied sun cream. We took a short jaunt to the clinic where the dentist took a look at my temporary crown. It easily fell out when she poked and prodded that area. She said that it would take about another hour for the lab to finish the coloring the permanent crown because she wanted it to match the rest of my teeth.
During that time, Lourdes wanted to get chelation therapy that is specific to her body. She’s been having horrible sciatica and was getting pretty desperate. And off we went, to our next adventure. She got evaluated, prescribed an IV bag of the chelating agent, and a nurse set everything up for her. I sat next to Lourdes and watched Orphan, in Spanish, and keeping an eye on her to make sure that she wasn’t having any complications.
The girl, Esther, in the movie, is nuttier than a fruitcake and pure evil. I don’t know why but watching it in Spanish just hit different. It was definitely creepier, that’s for sure. I feel like Mexican dubs are so much more dramatic.
After her treatment was finished, we went back to the dentist’s office and they were ready to attach my permanent crown. This took about another 30 minutes to ensure that everything was aligning properly and then they cleaned my mouth up afterward. The dentists joked that I could eat anything except rocks.
By this time, were were getting hungry. Neither of us ate breakfast, I know, I know. It’s horrible but I was never good at eating brekkie unless someone prepared it for me. And since Lourdes has an active eating disorder, she’s not going to eat breakfast alone either.
Nevertheless, we ended up at Las Ahumaderas, another joint where Anthony Bourdain dined at. He could do no wrong, according to my tastebuds. His palate was so refined and sophisticated but it was also refreshing to see him eating fast food too. My goal is go to as many places as he did to eat amazing foods. Eat Like Bourdain lists all the places he’s been to in the U.S. and world. Even places like Wisconsin, California, Michigan, Illinois, Texas, Minnesota, and more.

We didn’t know what to get but we knew we were hungry and everything looked good.

More Lebanese inspo with the spit of juicy meat.

Lourdes had one taco and only ate one tortilla, but not me. Fatty me ordered adobada—to compare it with the one from Tacos El Franc, and I got the Wilo—quesadilla with corn tortilla and carne asada and chorizo. It was $5.16 for both. The U.S. could never… not in this inflation, shrinkflation, fucked up economy.
Hands down, the adobada was much better at Tacos El Franc but that Wilo? That quesadilla was next level. The mix between the meats and the tenderness of the fatty chorizo melting in my mouth was insane. Chorizo from México is way better and different than from the U.S. It’s fresher, the quality is better, and the complexity of the spices in the meats are 100x superior. And I’ll tell you this, I was so happy to be able to chew on both sides of my mouth! I let Lourdes take a bite of it and her eyes got wide like saucers and we both knew that this was the one to order next time we go back.
We needed to digest our food and decided to schlep it over to Bizu and was kinda disappointed with their selection. The website made it look a lot bigger than what the store actually was.

We made our way to another DAX at the local shopping center and this location was even bigger than the one we went to the previous week. It was like Ulta + Sephora all in one gigantic store…. with snacks.
I know I said I wasn’t going to buy anything but…

I got blushes and eyeshadow by Pink Up Cosmetics, a Mexican brand. Not only was it budget friendly but the product was super pigmented and high quality.

100% pure cotton… and look at how big it is. For only a fraction of the cost in the States. And yes, I do need the large one because of my big pumpkin head.

After we spent about over an hour at DAX, we went to Soriana, a grocery store that reminds me of Cub Foods or Winco. It was fucking amazing!

Look at how big this bag is.

I got hella bags of these nuts for me and my assistants. The ones I bought the week before were all gone within a couple of days. But fear not, for they had bigger bags and it was cheaper at Soriana!

Lourdes wanted to try a chip of each. Note to self: never get these either of these because they were nasty AF! I don’t even know how anyone could eat them. I had a chip of each and had regrets instantly. We both spit it out the chips cause it wasn’t worth the calories and threw the bags away.

I saw this and it made me think about my diabetic patients who would benefit from these services. It’s like a one stop shop for foot care.
We felt like we didn’t walk off enough nor did we reach 10,000 steps yet. Next up was the flower district area.

$350 pesos converted to U.S. dollars = $18.98. And these florals were fresh too. I think Costco has prices that are similar to these but they don’t look nearly as good, especially the bouquets and half the number of roses.

Lourdes bought these for my mom. She is so ever thoughtful.
Till next time, TJ, it’s been fun.
On our way back to Lourdes’ apartment, we stopped by Starbucks so I could get an Americano and get caffeinated because my anemia was going into overdrive and sloth mode was taking over.
While I was getting my drink, I checked my work phone and saw all the e-mails and took a deep breath. Fuck. Can I just live my life? Can I just win the lotto already and be a billionaire?
I drove home bumpin’ BTS and singing along the whole way home. Unfortunately, after a certain time, the roads are under construction. They decrease the number of lanes and exits are blocked off, which in turn made my drive even longer, thus getting home later than anticipated.
When I got home, I took a shower, brushed my teeth, got into my pajamas, and turned on my work laptop. I worked for another four hours before falling asleep for almost 4.25 hours before I had to wake up and get ready for work.
There is no rest for the weary.
