central nervous system

What nervous habit(s) do you have?

Prompt created by yours truly.
Feel free to use any prompts for September that I post and/or tag me.
I’d love to read your responses

  • use a fidget ring when public speaking in large groups
  • lack eye contact
  • clench my jaw
  • dig my fingernails into my palm
  • get even quieter than I normally am

I used to shake my leg when I was younger, but my mom told me that it was bad etiquette and that it was considered bad luck in Korean culture… that it shakes away the prosperity, luck, and blessings that would normally come my way.

Healthy relationships need two people with preferences and initiative. Agreement is lovely, but participation keeps partnership from feeling one-sided.

Nervous leg syndrome here, too. If I’m ever interrogated by the police, they’re gonna think I’m GUIIIILLLTY.

I get really anxious around deadlines, especially when it comes to travel. I end up at airports / train stations SUPER early.

Not a huge fan of eye contact with strangers, but especially women. I worry they’ll feel intimidated or, worse, oogled.

The longer I go without a shower or the sweatier I get, the more self-conscious I feel about my appearance / smell.

    You know, the usual neuroses.

i like getting to the airport hella early too… to the point where i’m alright waiting an hour or two at the gate after i’ve walked around leisurely

I click my pen and it annoyed my classmates and teachers at school.

I am known to rub my hand to the front of my neck when talking. Something that takes a little longer than it used to. But I can’t stop doing.
Otherwise, I fidget with a thumb and finger. Although that has been hard and painful to do because of my hands.

    1. justrojie Avatar

i could totally see myself doing stuff like that too

      1. Liz Avatar

I don’t know how long I have been doing either of these before noticing. I just know my hand going to the front of my neck I have been aware of doing longer. From my late teens.

Absorb it all inside. Never show it ever.

but you’re still human… it’s bound to spill out one way or another

The majority of it is in my writing.

Yes you need prosperity so don’t shake your leg. It is good you gave up that habit.

The fidget ring is such a specific, useful detail, and the jaw clenching one I felt in my own face reading it. But the part that stopped me was your mom’s reasoning about the shaking leg, that it shakes away the prosperity coming your way. That’s a far more interesting explanation than the usual don’t-do-that, and it’s the kind of thing you carry for decades without meaning to. Getting quieter than usual is a nervous habit I don’t think gets named enough.

    1. justrojie Avatar

the fidget ring is really cool an discreet

Since I only know you through this blog, I’m always a little shocked when I see you write about how quiet you are. You don’t seem so quiet here on this blog!

I’m also a low eye contact person when I’m nervous. I’m nearsighted enough that taking my glasses off usually does the trick…

    1. justrojie Avatar

oh yes… i am quiet but my mind is not lol. i am also nearsighted but i wear contacts a majority of the time. that’s what i should do when i wear glasses!!

      1. Joe Avatar

I have a thing for unquiet minds…like seeks like, I guess!

Thank you for sharing this so honestly. ❤️ We all have little nervous habits, and I think it’s beautiful how you’ve learned to understand yourself through them. The story behind the leg-shaking habit and Korean tradition was especially interesting.

    1. justrojie Avatar

      thank you, Anowar!

#1 nervous habit of mine? Talking a lot. More than usual. And, also going on about random shit. BTW it’s Sam, I kind of keelhauled my system.. had to re-install Win11 like over 3 times, wrestled with the Sims 3 for a good portion of the day… and but, I THINK I have it under control now ha. 🙂

I’m not so good in eye to eye contact too. It sounds like you were raised up with high etiquette. Very opposite to me.😁

Thanks for sharing yours so honestly. I probably should have had a fidget ring although in my later career I just used fidget toys. I loved them. I jiggle my leg when I’m stressed. When I’m extremely stressed, I stop jiggling and apparently look like a calm mountain lake on a spring day except that I don’t feel that way AT ALL. I know. It’s weird.

    1. justrojie Avatar

oooh that’s really interesting! i got my fidget ring from a colleague who got it from amazon.
