What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?
My parents had an arranged marriage. They were brought together through careful orchestration from both families based on social status, religious beliefs, and values. This was to strengthen their economic stability and maintain social order while honoring their sense of duty and commitment to the families.
Despite not having a romantic courtship, they in time developed an understanding, stable, and eventually cared deeply for one another over the years. It definitely wasn’t giving K-drama vibes.
When I asked my mom, “What about love?” She responded that their kind of love was more about companionship, being support and lean on one another, and able to navigate difficult times together (immigrating to a new country). Their love grew over years and evolved over time.
I closed my eyes and thought to myself, “Fuck. That.”
