I’d love to read your responses.

I think that the song, My Immortal from Evanescence has the most relatable song about someone who’s living rent free in my head. Being haunted by what the person meant to me is complicated and it’s not meant to be romanticized either.

It’s just… I don’t know… beautifully devastating. And the song is a major banger.

I’m so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
‘Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won’t leave me alone

These wounds won’t seem to heal, this pain is just too real
There’s just too much that time cannot erase

When you cried, I’d wipe away all of your tears
When you’d scream, I’d fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me

You used to captivate me by your resonating light
Now, I’m bound by the life you left behind
Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me

These wounds won’t seem to heal, this pain is just too real
There’s just too much that time cannot erase

When you cried, I’d wipe away all of your tears
When you’d scream, I’d fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years

And you still have all of me
I’ve tried so hard to tell myself that you’re gone
But though you’re still with me, I’ve been alone all along

When you cried, I’d wipe away all of your tears
When you’d scream, I’d fight away all of your fears
I held your hand through all of these years
You still have all of me ah, me ah, me ah

I felt this. That line about “beautifully devastating” stayed with me.

My Immortal is one of those songs that does not just play in the background. It sits with you. Sometimes longer than you want.

What struck me in your response is that you did not romanticize it. Most people do. They turn pain into something poetic and safe. But this kind of memory, the one that lingers quietly, is not always gentle. It can be exhausting.

That feeling of someone being “gone” and still somehow present… yes, that is the part the song captures so well. Almost like the mind refuses closure.

Maybe that is why it stays relevant. Not because it is sad, but because it is honest.

Great lyrics. My favorite songs have to be steeped in great lyrics. For example, an excerpt from Bowie’s “We are the dead”:

    Yet now
We feel that we are paper, choking on you nightly
They tell me “Son, we want you, be elusive, but don’t walk far”
For we’re breaking in the new boys, deceive your next of kin
For you’re dancing where the dogs decay, defecating ecstasy
You’re just an ally of the leecher
Locator for the virgin King, but I love you in your fuck-me pumps
And your nimble dress that trails
Oh, dress yourself, my urchin one, for I hear them on the rails
Because of all we’ve seen, because of all we’ve said
    We are the dead….

I love My Immortal, I think of Bees when I hear it, bc she loved it, but she couldn’t listen to it though bc it made her cry. I love Evanescence, a long time ago, I sang bring me to life for my niece bc I’ve been singing all my life, I used to do recordings for my sisters when I was small, and I sang with my father (first foster family). at the piano singing gospel music bc at the time I was brought up Baptist, so…. I sang for Britney (second foster – the nasty ones but nieces Britney and Robin are nice) again just a few weeks ago.. she was floored. Obv this means I’m a hit at karaoke but I don’t want to toot my own horn, but yeah.
