Is your generation really ‘post racial’?

Prompt snagged from: NY Times

Hells no. As a double minority, I say this with the utmost confidence.

People of the West

We’re discovering how the education system gaslit generations over the years, like what the U.S. did to the Native Americans and now it’s all being exposed.

Right now, racism is running rampant and with no end in sight despite Gen Z being the most racially and ethnically diverse generation. But diversity doesn’t erase racism. I still have patients who don’t want to be seen by me because I’m not white.

Another prime example was what happened to George Floyd. Columbus Day changing to Indigenous Day but now people are fighting to have it changed back to Columbus Day. Some cities have scaled back on Juneteenth celebrations and DEI initiatives have been rolled the hell back.

I don’t know if I’ll ever see this country being post-racial in my lifetime but who knows?

I wonder, too. We can’t control the behaviour and mindset of everyone, especially in this manner.

I was just talking about this yesterday with a coworker, i feel like “kids today” are much more tolerant and aware of, accepting of, each other’s cultures…especially here in Canada but yeah, globally, longgg way to go!

Gen X was too busy getting high/drunk and bemoaning how shitty life was (back in the 90s) and how it only would get worse.

    1. justrojie Avatar

lolol do you think it’s gotten better or worse?

This really breaks my heart, as I was one of those people duped into believing we had really made progress. In my defense- I guess I just surrounded myself with people of like mind- and grew too comfortable thinking we were an accurate depiction of the entire population.

i think the racism was always there lowkey but after dump got elected, pple have been waving their racist flags for everyone to see, specially on the internet.

That may be the only good thing that comes out of all this chaos- we know who we are living among- they are no longer hidden.

        1. justrojie Avatar

          that is very true!

Unfortunately I agree. “Post Racial” a media buzz word in the Obama era and then used as an excuse by Republicans & judicial white supremacists to gut civil rights laws, the biggest of these, the of those the voting rights act. The republican assault on voting rights IS and has always been one of their main goals since Republicans adopted the Nixon southern strategy.

I hope someone certainly sees it, because I’m disappointed. I thought we’d made great inroads on that in the late 1960s and early 70s; if not in all areas, at least in getting along together and having each others’s backs. But it seems to always lurk under some rock or another, popping out just when we’re about to really make some progress. Right now seems as horrendous to me as earlier during Jim Crow, etc., etc.

I’m sure sorry. It’s not from lack of trying!

    1. justrojie Avatar

i’m hoping that pple continue to fight for what’s right and just.

You know what, I think deep down we are all racist and discriminate. Some have learned while some have not. The way we stereotype people is discrimination and we may deny it now, but at some point we have all been guilty of it.

    1. justrojie Avatar

i think everyone is biased. hell i’m even biased against my own race lolol

I feel the same towards my community too.
