How did you get started in writing?

I’d love read your responses.

In grade school, I was writing nightly in my diary about the handsome boys who would never ever look at me because I was fucking hideous with glasses and braces. It was rather pathetic, but what can I say? I was just a kid then…

Moving onto junior high, in a creative writing class where every day, we were supposed to write a short story within ten minutes. Some of them were genuine bangers while the others were major flops.

Junior year in high school, I was an associate editor for the yearbook. When I was a senior in high school I became the academics editor. The editor-in-chief started referring to me as “my pages are perfect”. I had issues. Big time. Being a perfectionist, I didn’t want anyone else touching my work because they weren’t going to do it right or the way I want it done. I was the photo editor for everything academics-related and it had to be laid out just right. I’d take the school computer home if I ran out of time on campus, just to get the finishing touches looking flawless.

I also had eight associate editors underneath me and it was like herding cats. My job was to make sure that they had all their stories before the deadlines, keep their pages looking uniform, and make sure everything looked great. Not only that, I had my own stories that I had to write, which included interviewing school faculty and students. I had to make riveting stories about academics and it wasn’t easy because I’m an introvert. But nevertheless, I did it.

At seventeen years old, I started uni and began blogging. Bruh, I wrote about EVERY damn thing. The debauchery, the shenanigans, the trysts, the drunken stupors, the friendships that felt like lifelines and the ones that dissipated faster than I could click “publish”. I also wrote about abandonment, figuring myself out and where I was headed, along with the twenty plus times I relocated over the years.

I took a hiatus for a couple of years though from writing. I was going through breakup and after breakup and family and friends were dying left and right; it felt like my wounds were reopening whenever I sat in front of my computer to type a post. It wasn’t a good time for me and writing no longer made me happy. In fact, it felt more like a chore… so I took a break.

Two years ago, I’m back to blogging… for better or for worse.

So… how did you get started?

You started so young at blogging. At seventeen, I was a babysitter of my cousin’s daughter ๐Ÿคญ I don’t know. My Filipino teacher at HS just pick me as sportswriter, and I remember I won, and I don’t know why I won๐Ÿ˜ and then, life lead me here because the book reviewing sites rejected me many times. I don’t know about blogging, but now I enjoyed it.

I’m sorry about your friends and family dying. Hopefully, you are doing all right with all of it. That’s terrible, but it is good you are writing again. You write very well. Keep that up definitely.
I started writing because of this disability. It is just awful being shot in the head. I would not wish this on anyone on here. I just show that I am still here and kicking. That is it. I walk with a limp, my left arm doesn’t function right. It sucks, but maybe one of these days. I will rise above it.

    1. justrojie Avatar

thanks, Jesse! I can’t imagine what it would be like to be shot in the head by your own cousin, nevertheless…

( little cat posted comment…๐Ÿ˜„here๐Ÿ˜…lol) I read, I experience, it comes back out in my own tone, I wrote french poetry, my grandmother read it liked it, my bro read it> SAID it sounded like Henri Miller!! I WAS SET!๐Ÿ˜ƒ Picked up the Tropic of Capricorn+++++Tolstoy, Dosto., Camus(The best “absurdist” oh I made a comic book at age maybe 7, and wrote REALLY subjective short stories set in the wilderness at like 20, lost these, then recent the 3 books, which were quickly written and based on moralistic responsible lines of thought a bit but with originality, I think my Poems and Haiku is best out of the 3, and well there’s humour+ some erotica lol so catharsis>>> goes in…..comes out….goes in…..comes out…right? YA!!!

I wanted a way to express myself without talking and I found blogging as one such method. I’m an introvert and I had low self esteem, I thought of starting blog 7 years back but couldn’t do it. I was afraid people will not accept me.

Then I braced myself last year and started blogging 8 months back. It was a wise decision and I thought I should have started sooner. I enjoy blogging now and have so many great friends here ๐Ÿ˜€

  12. Info-Man Avatar

I first started to write my diary. Which I wrote for straight every day .Then i discovered that my family can read it secretly so i shifted to online blogging. ๐Ÿ˜‘๐Ÿ˜‘๐Ÿ˜‘ So that they won’t read it . I can’t write my feelings on the piece of paper because the privacy I want, i never get that ,I know my sisters , specifically my ELDER sister will never give me that . She once read my personal diary out loud once to the whole family. ๐Ÿ˜‘๐Ÿ˜‘๐Ÿ˜‘

I got my start writing through reading.

All that reading opened me up to the possibility of creating my own stories.

I wrote short stories in grade school and high school. In college, I joined a theater group made up of engineers and non-theater majors and soon added playwrite to my list of (dubious) accomplishments.

(The theater group was ruined when theater majors got wind of it and destroyed it from within.)

For a few years, I wrote and crafted Xmas short story ‘books’ and gave them out as cards. I also made mini book stories for the Missus as gifts before we got married. They starred a thinly veiled version of her who had crazy adventures.

    (And she still married me!)

While I had a couple of false starts on novels in college, I didn’t finish my first one until about a decade after graduating.

I’ve got two more that have been ‘in the hopper’ for about a decade. One a complete first draft that needs A LOT of work, the other a sequel to my two complete novels that’s about 2/3rds done.

I really need to get going on those again, but life has worn me out…

I’m glad you’re writing again and I discovered you. While some of the K-pop stuff is and always will be beyond me, you’re other stuff is very relatable. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. justrojie Avatar

oh snap!! playwriting, how hard was that? i’m glad i found you too!

  15. ibarynt Avatar

That was a lot of writing and life. How do you feel returning to writing?

    1. justrojie Avatar

right now, i’m feeling pretty good about it. i actually look forward to writing and reading people’s blogs and comments. it’s a good way to wind down from the day.

      1. ibarynt Avatar

There’s joy in your writing and it comes across. Some may be hard but the sincerity is felt.

        1. justrojie Avatar

          thank you, Iba!!

Can’t reply to your reply for some reason…

Writing a play is different, and I struggled to figure that out. Had to cut an entire scene from my first play because the setup was, as the director / founder put it, “too Rube-Goldbergesque” to do in reality (it involved a long chain reaction that ended with something, possibly an anvil, I don’t remember, landing on a character).

Something that would be no problem in a book. ๐Ÿ™‚

The second biggest issue was people arguing about the format. Oh wait, that was the voice actors for one of the radio plays I wrote. Yeah, I’ve done that too. They even made it to air.

I’ve had a lot of fun with my writing experiences and really need to get back into it seriously.

    1. justrojie Avatar

whoah that is amazing!! yasss you should get back into it!

I have moments when I consider it. Then I roll over and fall asleep.
