Currently listening to: Lady Marmalade – Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya, P!nk

I had no business listening to this song when I was younger. How was I supposed to know this song was about female sex workers in the French Quarter of New Orleans? I don’t speak French.

I also was oblivious to the drama between Christina Aguilera and P!nk.

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir?
(Ce soir)
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?
{All my sistas, yeah}

Do you wish your conversations were less small talk and more โ€œbig talkโ€?

Prompt snagged from: NY Times

Yes, all the damn time.

I hate smol talk, especially at: work meetings, networking events, interviews, and definitely on dates.

“How’s your day going?”
“What are you doing this weekend?”
“How about that weather we’re having?”

It’s all just filler talk and I’d rather get straight to the point.

Tell me what you’re doing.
Tell me what you’re thinking.
Tell me what you’re struggling with.
Tell me how you did xyz.
Tell me where we’re going.

Give me substance.

I know, I know. Small talk is necessary sometimes to build rapport, ease tension, and test the waters before people feel safe to dive into whatever it is that needs to be said.

I’m not much of a talker, it’s that way by my parentโ€™s design. I’d rather listen, observe, and speak when I have something meaningful to say.

Writing on the other hand…

I’d rather ask if this is only for fun or not.๐Ÿคญ I like that “tell me” rather than “what.” It led us to discovery.

Yes, and only few years ago I realised that this song is actually a cover!! Anyway… lately I have been using the question “how are you doing?” a bit differently. I used to use it as a small talk, but lately I realised it would make a difference when I ask that and mean it. Like I ask because I care about the answer. Sometimes, when people realised that I do mean it when I ask about how they are doing, they changed their answer and the small talk became a biiiig talk. Who knows?

i didn’t know this was a cover till you just told me! i think if you truly mean it, that’s different for sure cause you care.

Smol talk distracts us. I think that is what it was developed for. Getting to the meat is, and should be after minimal small talk, except in my case, then with me, you just a) need to get a word in edgewise and b) tell me to stfu or else you are taking away something near and dear to me; could be anything or nothing… just the implication will do.

Now this is where we vary- I am a small talker. I save all the important stuff for my therapist and my fiction.

Sometimes, though, small talk is a trail that leads to big talk. It can be annoying, though, when the small talk seems to just be a substitute for silence. It doesn’t take me long in a small talk conversation to ask myself “is this going somewhere?”

My step-dad used to talk a lot so he made me a good listener too. So I am with you on that one. I dont talk a lot either, unless I have coffee or I am reading the news. Then, I can talk.

      i’m a good listener too!
