It’s fair to say that California has had enough of the nonsense that’s been going on since last year. Now there’s an initiative in the November 2028 ballot called “Should California leave the US“. It seems as though this isn’t the first time that this initiative has tried to get passed.

California along with Oregon and Washington already have the West Coast Health Alliance. The state is also looking to launch PHNIX (Public Health Network Innovation Exchange). California is also the fourth largest global economy. Not just in the country but in the world.

I know that SCOTUS said that the Union is “indissoluble” and that independence wouldn’t be binding under the federal law but damn, I have to ask, does it matter anymore?

According to Harvard Political Review, there are a growing number of residents who WOULD say yes. In July 2025, 44% of the residents said that they would vote for the state to become a nation independent of the U.S. I can only imagine that this number has grown since last year.

But I wonder if it’ll have the same impact as Brexit had on the EU and vice versa?

It’s a very distinguished state, kind of a Monaco?? Not at all, but a country state, ok, I can see that, it has allies being the 4th largest spot on the econo map

    1. justrojie Avatar

i’ve never been to monaco so idk?

I love the Mediterranean!!! But Cali, it’s a question of military, it would have to exit but keep ties obviously, difficult!

        1. justrojie Avatar

          yeah that’s for sure

I think in the long run a Calexit (or Cascadiaexit, including OR and WA) would be a bad idea–it would be a very messy divorce! And there wouldn’t even be any guarantee that it would work. But! I sympathize with the sentiment, and even within this union the free states have to hang together against a tyrannical national government. Greetings from Northern Cascadia!

i also doubt that it would be possible considering that california depends on the colorado river and the electric grid

Red states would suffer is blue states left the union. Most red states are net welfare states from the major metropolitan/urban areas of this nation.

    1. justrojie Avatar

well as the red states like to say, they can pull themselves up from their bootstraps. i imagine that more of our money will go to these welfare states after people get kicked off medicaid for not being able to work x amount of hours a month

Oh my. Maybe every state should follow suit to fuck over the Federal Gov

    1. justrojie Avatar

wouldn’t that be nice? but i figure the red states will all band together. but i do see a lot of them turning purple/blue now.

        Yeah

Texas wants to do the same. I think it would have the same impact as Brexit. They would have to renegotiate every agreement the state has, and it would be a real pain for the people of California or Texas if, by some miracle, they were allowed to separate from the U.S.

    1. justrojie Avatar

idk how it could be done but if they do it… i’d be supremely impressed

This is hard and on another level. I think California can stand on its own, but there are always cons to it. Stay safe, Rojie. This writing is so informative!

      thank you, Hazel!

        My pleasure, Rojie

I suppose every state should have the right to leave the Union every time the political winds blow in an unacceptable to them direction.

Oh wait, when the South did it, that was wrong.

So wrong we spilt blood over it.

    A lot of blood.

Elections happen. Sometimes we (feel like we) win, sometimes we don’t. But eventually, the pendulum swings the other way, and then the other half of our country is pissed about the government and muttering about secession.

Let me repeat a part of that:

    Our country.

    OUR country.

If every time somebody doesn’t like the outcome of an election, a state bails on the Union, things will get ugly and literally fractured fast.

Like it or not, we all agreed to accept the will of the majority. That’s how democracies and peaceful transitions of power happen.

The minute we stop doing that, the Great Experiment is over and done with.

The only certainties in life are death, taxes, and the pendulum swinging the other way.

Take comfort in that. If you’re unhappy now, you’ll be thrilled in a few years.

    And then unhappy again.

    Then thrilled again.

    Is it a great system?

    No.

Is there a better system out there?

    No.

tbh i want off the pendulum roller coaster ride lol

      1. ianmdudley Avatar

You and me both. But at what end does it stop?

        1. justrojie Avatar

          idk if it’ll ever stop

Hopefully Trump won’t be in office for much longer. He already has health issues with his hand. I think this is about Trump and his tariffs. Hopefully CA doesn’t become its own country. That would be awful because to visit would be more money. Good for the state bad for people who wanted to visit. We will just see where this goes.

    1. justrojie Avatar

yes, i’m curious to see what will happen next!

      1. Jesse Pallante Avatar

Yes it would be interesting indeed.

Is that realistically possible, to be independent?

    1. justrojie Avatar

i’m not sure… i have a question because at one point, i believe, correct me if i’m wrong, that india and pakistan were part of british india and they separated ways… how do you think that’s affected india?

      1. ibarynt Avatar

Well the British messed up everything. The partition happened and I think that has a lot to do with religion too. Kashmir which is supposed to be part of India is also claimed by Pakistan, so that is the LoC (line of control), heavily militarized. Both countries are still fighting over it. That’s why so much terrorist attacks too.

        1. justrojie Avatar

wow that’s wild… ugh i wonder what it woulda been like if the brits never seized control

          1. ibarynt Avatar

Maybe we would be fragmented with different kingdoms?

          2. justrojie Avatar

            that would be interesting…
