I deleted TikTok not too long ago. Lately, a lot of content is getting buried and influencers aren’t able to push their posts or videos without it getting flagged. People who are reporting on protests or criticizing certain figures are getting censored or labeled as inappropriate. I believe in freedom of speech, and having restricted content isn’t going to work for me.
Meta probably isn’t too far behind. I wouldn’t be surprised if it heads in the same direction. Between the data collection, monitoring DMs, and selling our information, it’s starting to feel more invasive than social and I’m not feelin’ that.
I’m keeping Bluesky, it is a decentralized and open-source social media platform. I like that but I feel like it’s still missing something.
So I’ve decided to download UpScrolled. It’s a free app that actually reminds me of old school Instagram, back when posts showed up because people followed you, not because an algorithm forced its way into my feed. They won’t sell my data, they have humans moderating content and not AI, and there’s no shadowbanning either. I can still chat, post pics and videos, and stories, without feeling like I’m being scrutinized and micromanaged.
UpScrolled is based in Australia and they are working toward monetization. It hasn’t rolled out yet, but it’s in development. I’m curious enough to give it a try and see if it is something worth trying.
I know I’ll be losing all my followers but I’m okay with it. I don’t mind starting out fresh.
