There are more, but there are three in particular that catch my eye…
In the dark parking lot,
three black cats loiter.
They are like shadows without seams
impossible to tell apart.
They are feral.
They are wild.
They are free.
Their eyes are as sharp as obsidian shards
Each night, I open my car door wide
offering to take them with me.
“Come here,” I whisper.
They pause.
Lifting their velvet heads
long enough to meet my gaze
before slipping away into the darkness again
They never come.
They watch me from afar.
Three black cats.
Three times the rejection.
Three reminders that sometimes love
is meant to be admired from afar,
to be nurtured and fed in secret,
and cherished without being captured.
