Before brushing his teeth, I wanted to snap a pic of my dog’s grill. When we took him to the vet, they pointed out that he still has all his baby teeth. Apparently those are supposed to fall out around three to six months, but his never did. So now he’s got teeth growing behind teeth like a shark. Look at the double canines.

The vet said extraction is preferred, but all I’m seeing is dollar signs. I do have pet insurance for him but it won’t cover his dental. If we don’t remove them, the plaque buildup could get pretty gnarly.

Has anyone dealt with this before? He’s a rescue and we got him when he was a year old a couple of months ago.

    I looked it up on Gemini and it said. They can do it as a discount when you have the dog spayed or neutered. Or else it could cost up to a thousand. I’m like you, I would not like to put more money into the dog, so just brush his teeth really good, until you have the money available to get it done. It is just a suggestion.

      yeah… he’s already neutered so… this is gonna unfortunately be on the back burner

    I have no experience with this. But I would be interesting in finding out how it is resolved. Won’t they just eventually fall out?

      They were supposed to fall out but they are hanging in there…

      I imagine it would be since they would need to pull out several teeth and put him under anesthesia

    Aww poor guy..ya know at 55 I still got baby teeth, never had my wisdom teeth come in either

      Yeah he seems so happy and not a care in this world about his teeth especially and he eats fine…

        My dentist threw it out that if they ecer fall out I should spebd $$$$$ on replacements, but I am at an age where A. I an’t afford it, B. I Don’t want dental debt payment plan, C. I had a dentist at 19 forget to replace a tenp filling costing me a molar, I’ve been without a lower right molar since 1989 why replace any.

    Dog expenses. You don’t see them until suddenly, a huge one pops up. They’re never small.

    I’ve never dealt with this particular expense, tho.

    Could you just give him hard chew toys and hope that loosens them up?

    Maybe one way to look at it is how many expensive dinners / trips this would be equivalent to?

      😆 I’m actually trying to roll back on my spending this year… I have chew toys and he seems happy? When the vet said they will be having a discount, it already sounds expensive to me…

        Yeah, every time I freak out about our spending and we try to cut back, multiple big ticket items crap out or medical stuff happens and force us to spend.

        When it rains, it pours.

            One last tip, which may or may not be helpful. We’ve found that rural vets charge WAY less than city vets. But that means, assuming they do the procedure you need, that you have to drive out there.

    Oh yeah… that’s going to cost some serious 💵. Our vet was asking for crazy money to clean our dog’s teeth. My solution was to buy one of those long-lasting chew treats and give him one once a week. It’s been keeping his teeth clean so far. I would just leave the baby teeth alone unless you start to notice that the dog isn’t happy.

        I alternate between Ol’ Roy Long-Lasting Munchy Bones and Purina Busy Bone. They have different flavors, but I usually buy the ones with peanut butter. He usually chews on them for a couple of minutes.
