I live among creatives. Unfortunately, I am not one of them.
In grade school, my mom drew my homework for me because my drawings were pretty awful. I’m fairly certain my teachers knew. My classmates def knew. No one ever said anything though. For one science project in the fourth grade, she illustrated a 3D heart, while I stood in front of it at the science fair explaining to everyone how blood moved through it.
My mom and my aunt both took formal drawing and calligraphy lessons. They can read and write Chinese characters, but they cannot speak Chinese. Korean calligraphy, historically, uses Chinese characters (Hanja).
None of it makes sense to me. The only things I know in Mandarin or Cantonese are a handful of cuss words that my Chinese and Taiwanese friends taught me. As far as writing, I can write my Korean name in Chinese characters and that’s about it.
These are paintings and calligraphy that my mom did. I wish I could tell you what it says. I tried online translation tools and none of it made any sense. I asked my mom, but she explained it in Korean, and some of the words don’t translate in English.
If anyone reading this can translate it, please let me know.
