LINK: holiday heart syndrome
It’s that time of the year again when we start seeing a surge of patients with holiday heart syndrome, especially as December winds down and celebrations get stacked.
Holiday heart syndrome is a condition where people develop atrial fibrillation (A-fib), an irregular and often rapid heart rhythym. When the heart isn’t beating in a steady or regularly, blood can pools in the heart, which increases the risk of clot formation, and this can lead to a stroke.
It can occur when binge drinking, overeating (specially foods with high salt content), lack of sleep, and stress.
Common signs and symptoms include:
- heart palpitations, like your heart is beating out of its chest or a fluttering sensation in the chest
- pressure in the chest or chest pain
- shortness of breath
- dizziness or lightheadedness
- fatigue
Stay safe and enjoy the holidays.
Love,
rojie
