What is something you didn’t understand adults complaining about when you were a child, but you now understand?

Growing up, I couldn’t figure out why older people were always complaining about being tired. Like… tired from what??!

This *points up* was frfr my daily routine in high school and I didn’t blink twice. And I did it all with the stamina of a caffeinated squirrel despite having anemia.

Now? Now that I’m a full adult, I get it.

I wake up and feel like I’ve run a marathon in my sleep. I drink coffee not because it wakes me up, but because it’s comforting, warm, and tastes good. Half the time, the caffeine doesn’t even hit right and I could easily fall asleep after drinking an Americano. I am so cooked…

And no, I don’t have sleep apnea. But I do have decision making fatigue, that’s for sure.

Yes it is true sometimes coffee doesn’t work. I go to sleep with a good cup of coffee. It is sad but true.

But coffee does make everything better 😆

Even my sister drinks many cups of coffee, she will still fall asleep if she lies down. I think, as they say, it’s a universal thing for being tired as adults. I think this vocabulary doesn’t exist for children. That’s the difference.🤭

I couldn’t figure out how they didn’t know how to manage money. I distinctly remember telling my parents one day on the way home from church ( I was about 11) as they talked about money-“All you have to do is say, today when I work, I will pay the gas bill. Tomorrow when I work, I will pay for food- and once you have worked the days that are already spoken for- you can spend the rest!” They told me to sit back (This was way before they made us wear seatbelts) But I never forgot that logic- and once I was working, I picked and kept a job that allowed me to do just that.

Wait another 15-20 (? – not sure of your exact age) years. Take all the exhaustion you feel now and triple it.

Quadruple it if you have kids.

By the time I retire, all I’ll be doing is sleeping just to catch up on my needed rest.

And coffee? A useless b*tch. But I still drink it. Mostly out of fear that things would be MUCH worse without it.

Reading your post made me laugh and empathize at the same time. As a child, I never understood why adults were always tired, but now as a full-grown adult, it makes perfect sense. The responsibilities, constant decision-making, and mental and physical fatigue really do take a toll. Your “caffeinated squirrel” comparison was spot on and so relatable. The joy of adulthood is… realizing how deep fatigue can run, and how little comforts like a warm cup of coffee make all the difference.

Adulting certainly grinds the edges off. Enough years of that and you will be smooth as a river pebble–that’s how I am beginning to feel! I hope you are able to give yourself a few days to sleep and veg…
