In the hospital.
It’s the last place most people would think to look, but I’ve seen more beauty there than in any sunset or skyline. I see resilience. I see hope. I see people fighting for another day, even when the odds are stacked against them.
I once had a patient who coded twice, his heart stopped and both times he was resuscitated back. For a while, it was touch and go. We weren’t sure if he’d make it, but he did. And when he stabilized finally, I could see it in his eyes. He was going to be okay.
A few weeks later, he came back to the hospital to thank me and the rest of the staff. He said he’s changed his outlook on life, adjusted his lifestyle, and was ever so grateful for another chance.
Not everyone’s story ends that way. Some goodbyes come far too soon, and some rooms stay depressingly heavy, long after the monitors go quiet. But for those who get a new lease on life, watching them walk out of those hospital doors is where I find inspo and beauty.
