rotting in 2025

LINK: rotting in 2025

There are days when I’ll use my PTO just to sleep in or start work later. Sometimes, it’s because I stayed up too late catching up on work. Other times, it’s because I was doing self-care—like going to a concert or spending time with friends—and the night ran longer than I anticipated.

Is it responsible? Probably not. But when work-life balance doesn’t exist, what options do I really have? I have enough PTO banked (250 hours as of now) to afford a few slow mornings, and sometimes rest trumps productivity.

When I was a director, I remember taking Black Friday off, not to chase after the best sales or stand in lines, but to sleep. At the time, I was constantly on call, juggling endless responsibilities while dealing with anemia. It was exhausting. I didn’t need a getaway; I needed recovery.

There have also been multiple days in a row, where I’ve used PTO from my primary job just to work at my secondary one due to meetings, audits, or trainings. My friends think that’s insane—and maybe they’re right, but that’s just how it is.

That said, I do occasionally use my PTO for what it’s meant for: to travel. Sometimes, it’s a domestic trip and other times (if approved) it’s international. But even then, I’m so drained that the first day or two of vacation goes toward catching up on sleep.

Side note: Even though I was born in California and am a U.S. citizen, I don’t dare fly out of the country these days. Not in this administration anyway.

How do you use your PTO? To rest? To live? Or just to catch up?

It’s so true that travelling to other places, staying there can surely involve catching up on sleep. Though, I can’t much to PTO, my sisters usually used it for special celebrations and other important processing.

    Stay healthy, Rojie. Hugs!

Personal time off Rojie? It’s not familiar to me, is it like paid vacation or sick time?
On the farm PTO stood for power take off lol

I don’t think there is any shame in using PTO for staycations. I haven’t been able to afford or prioritize an actual vacation in many years.

At the moment, I don’t get things like paid time off. I’m an independent contractor. But, I do set my own hours. And trust you me, I take plenty of rest time. I just don’t get paid for it.

I would take the scheduling freedom and flexibility over the paid time off, though. Sure, a few weeks of free money is nice. But the ability to work around my mental fog is so helpful.

Eventually, we’ll all be out of work anyway. Did you hear about the CEOs of companies like Ford and how they went to China to check out the dark plants there? The manufacturing plants don’t need lights because all of the work is automated. Seeing that in action is sure to spark some American competition and inevitably accelerate the pace of technological innovation.

Any way, which ever way you choose to spend your free time, I hope you enjoy it.

    Take care.

Thanks, Justin! I’ve heard about these dark plants and I feel like that’s def going to happen in the US, specially those places that don’t have a union. Lots of places will be using robotics, ai, outsourcing and who knows what else so that the people can make more money. I also do consulting as a third job but it’s not regular enough for me to depend on it plus I like having my insurance coverage and time off in case I get sick

I love the occasional PTO break. I prefer them in the winter, when the mornings are dark. Then, brew a pot of coffee, and watch an old classic film. It’s even better if it’s raining out.

Sadly, I never use all my PTO. As a teacher it’s more work to make a sub plan then to go to work.

I would use a sick day. Not my PTO.

For us to use our sick day, I have to be out at least three days with a note from the md before my sick pay kicks in

Being that my job only offers (thanks to 25+ yrs of service 5 hrs per pay period it used to be 4) of PTO to use for everything. Most times people get screwed out of vacation because of illness and snow/ice related issues. The company I worked for prior to this current one (who bought us out) from 1999-2009 offered 3 weeks PTO, 4 personal days and 999 hours of sick time. Essentially great benefits shit pay and now shit benefits (the exception being company wide access to profit sharing).

      For everything?? Yikes!! 😳

Yeah for everything..Utah based Mormon owned company with slightly better pay than the previous company. The owner of the company used to also be the President till he stepped down abd used to shove prayer into workplace events. Thankfully that ended.

I have been retired for over a year now- and still prefer being home or in bed to doing anything else…

      I can’t wait for retirement

I tend to bank my PTO so I can (in theory) take a large block off.

So instead of burning up vacation time to rest, I drag my ass through the workweek then recover on the weekend.

The Missus prefers 3-day weekends. She says it takes me two days to recover / not be grumpy, so I’m no fun until the third day.

    1. justrojie Avatar

I also don’t feel fully relaxed til the third day

You even get PTO. That’s an alien concept here.

How do people go on holiday? No pay?

      1. ibarynt Avatar

There’s casual leave. Normally people accumulate the leaves and try to club it with any holidays, so it can be longer. When that’s over, it becomes unpaid.
