Currently listening to: The Life of a Showgirl – Taylor Swift feat. Sabrina Carpenter
I took her pearls of wisdom
Hung them from my neck
I paid my dues with every bruise
I knew what to expect
Do you wanna take a skate on the ice inside my veins?
They ripped me off like false lashes
And then threw me away
Jessica and I went to go see The Official Release Party of a Showgirl and it felt like we were invited into read Taylor Swift’s diary or take a peek inside her mind — complete with lyric videos, the debut of The Fate of Ophelia music video, and behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot.
When she was reflecting on the songs in this album and unpacking the stories behind them, it definitely became more meaningful to me. She explained that this track centers around a showgirl named Kitty, who seemed to have all the glitz and glam. But behind the sparkles and sequins was an illusion and that it was full of fakeness and darkness.
Taylor also mentioned that people warned her about the music industry not being all flowers and magic, yet she persisted and endured. And when she said she chose Sabrina Carpenter to collaborate because of how Sabrina could pivot and weaponize criticism into fuel, I felt that it fit with the narrative of this song.

On the outside, I look like I’m doing well. My coworkers see me as someone who has their shit together — solid career, multiple degrees, a busy social life. Polished (when needed). Composed. I’ve had colleagues wish that they could be like me or swap lives with me. But what they don’t see are the cracks that live quietly underneath… yet I keep going… the show must go on.
