I started going to NKTOB (New Kids on the Block) concerts regularly in 2022, thanks to Five Star, who surprised me with tickets to see them. During the pandemic, people were rediscovering or discovering boy bands to fangirl over. A new wave of Blockheads popped up, and it wasn’t just NKOTB. Many of my ARMY friends first got into BTS during the lockdown. I mean really, what else are people supposed to do back then besides binge shows, doom scroll, and spend hours video chatting?
Fast forward to Joey McIntyre’s solo concert at the House of Blues. I had just finished work and was wiped out, so I took a quick 20 minute nap in my car before heading out. Five Star managed to snag really good seats. At first, I wasn’t planning on going — I’ve been trying to rein in my spending — but when she told me she was gifting me a ticket, how could I say no?
The concert was scheduled for 1900 but it didn’t start till 2000. One thing I love about K-pop concerts is their punctuality, which American concerts fail. But I wasn’t complaining cause I was starving, so I grabbed a slice of pepperoni pizza and a can of Liquid Death, while Five Star went for chicken strips, fries, and a Diet Coke.
The crowd was such a vibe. It was a mix — teens, middle-aged women and men, different races, different orientations, all there to see him perform. He is one of the more open-minded members of NKTOB.
The energy was wild. Women were singing, screaming, hollering, and living their best lives. It was fun watching people having the time of their lives. Music really is special, healing, and transformative.
