i heart the 90s

Amanda and I bought tickets to go see I Love the 90’s (she’s not into K-pop) a while back. I was looking forward to going to another concert, it’s been a minute and I felt like I was having withdrawals. I listen to a broad range of music so this should be entertaining no matter what.

IDK what happened to us. Normally, Amanda and I plan everything down to the last detail. Fits, dinner, carpooling—all that is usually locked in early. But this time? We both got super busy and winged it. I texted her around 1000 to ask when we should meet up, and she just said, “Come over at six, the concert doesn’t start till eight. We’ll figure food out then.”

I fell back asleep for another hour before getting up. I had cheese and crackers for lunch with two cups of coffee. I cleaned a bit, did laundry, read blogs, and took a two hour nap before getting ready for the night. I’ve been trying to sleep as much as I can. The heat + humidity + anemia = no bueno.

We ended up going to Islands because it was close to the venue and neither of us wanted to go to Dimassi’s — overpriced and not good. At Islands, I treated myself to a mojito (since I wasn’t driving) and ordered sliders. I thought that it would be two small sliders but nope, it ended up being four. I tapped out after two and boxed the rest.

We got to the show and, to my surprise, our seats were five rows deep. Amanda was very happy about this since I got our tickets (she’s got our next concert). The crowd was a mix of generations, everything from the 1960s babies to 2000s kids all vibing to the same songs.

The first group to perform was Tag Team. The only song that I knew was Whoomp! It’s still a popular song since it’s being used in a bunch of commercials and IG reels.

Tone Lōc was easy to recognize because of his raspy voice. He sang Funky Cold Medina and Wild Thing, nostalgia washed over everyone.

I was a bit disappointed when Color Me Badd only had one of their original band members (Mark Calderon – the one who looks sorta like George Michael) performing. They sang I wanna Sex You Up and I Adore mi amor.

The meme for this group is epic and lives forever.

Vanilla Ice talking about how we’d be happier if we lived like we were in the 90’s.

Vanilla Ice closed it out and sang Ice Ice Baby, Too Cold, Ninja Rap, Play that Funky Music, Prozac, Insane Killers, Ride the Horse, ICE. His songs were throwbacks and he sang newer tracks.

He teamed up with Tone Lōc for a cover of ODB’s (Ol’ Dirty Bastard) Got Your Money. The stage was absolute chaos cause there were random people in costumes and women from the audience were invited to dance on stage. I stayed in my seat because… yeah, I’m shy like that.

Jim Carrey as Vanilla Ice | Ice Ice Baby | In Living Color

At one point, another friend sent me a clip of Jim Carrey impersonating Vanilla Ice on In Living Color and I laughed so much. Fucking hilarious.

I had to give it to Tone Lōc and Vanilla Ice. They were very very generous to their fans. They invited everyone to take selfies with them, to go up to the stage, and even signed t-shirts for fans while singing. I’ve never seen that before. Is this what happened at concerts in the 90’s?

Another generational difference I noticed was that most of the people there were not recording the concert. They were living in the moment while the younger crowd had their phones out recording everything. Obvi, I had my phone out. LOL.

My fit was all black. Tank top and leggings. Amanda, of course, looked more put together and looked adorbs in her dress and tights. I didn’t even bother with my colored contacts. Maybe the next concert?

Walking out of the venue, Amanda and I were talking animately as we crossed the street as directed. We were laughing and replaying our favorite songs.

That’s when a car came tearing around the corner. The driver wasn’t looking, and before I could even process what was happening, the headlights were right in front of me despite cars honking to get our attention. He came fast and furious, and for a split second, my body decided to lurch forward.

At the very last second, the driver swerved, missing me by what felt like inches. Had he not swerved and had I not moved faster… well… yeah. I escaped death. Again. Le sigh.

Amanda spun around, screaming expletives at the car as it sped off into the night, her voice echoing down the street. Me? I just kept walking, my legs didn’t stop and I didn’t look back.

I live another day.

This looks fun, Rojie. The music is cool, and I wonder what’s the lyrics of the song with the title “I wanna s*x you up.”🤭

I’ve been on the road a good number of years now, and the caliber of driver had dropped significantly in recent years.

And not just because of an aging-induced decline in my driving skills.

Glad he missed. Tho you could have retired on the settlement money…

😆 idk what good it would be if I was disabled from it

Omg what a crazy cool, crazy night. I saw the original Color me badd open for Paula Abdul in the early 90’s. They did a small set of all of their singles, really glad I had a chance to experience that. My wife and I went to a retro rap 90’a show. Rob Bass did Joy & Pain & It takes two, Biz Markie followed and did way too.much that people left to get merch or food & drink, Salt N Peppa did all their hits, but didn’t sound so good and Naughty by Nature headlined with a killer crowd pleasing set. Best group of the evening.

You look fabulous 😍 in that pic. I am glad you had fun at that concert 😁. Awesome. For that guy who almost hit you. He should have his license revoked because he should have stopped, while you and your friend crossed the street. I have done that on many occasions. That was uncalled for. I am glad you are ok.

Thanks so much! I’m glad that I survived another day!
