I used to think that the day would never come

After having dinner with coworkers, I headed out to meet my favorite thespians for coffee and dessert at my go-to spot for Yemeni coffee. One of them had just performed at a playhouse that night, and the other had been in the audience cheering her on.
I got there early and ordered my usual Mofawar (it has cardamom and cream, no sugar). I’m not sure how much caffeine it packs, but it’s strong enough to wake up every nerve in my body while still being smooth and indulgent. I had a craving for something tart, so I treated myself to a lemon bar. Not exactly traditional Yemeni fare but I wanted it.
When they arrived, they were starving and tired. We ordered two chicken fatayers, a chicken musakhan roll, and a Yemeni latte.
A little while later, more food appeared. Two cheese fatayers and a potato curry type of fatayer. That cheese one was absolutely delicious, but then again, I am biased because I love cheese.
We sat outside eating and drinking for nearly three hours, losing track of time as we talked about life, swapped philosophies, and spoke dreams for the future. Looking around us, we were definitely the minorities but it didn’t bother me. I’ve been one since I was a child, if anything it was all too familiar with me.
It reminded me of other late-night conversations that I’ve had: studying with my uni friends at Perkins until the early hours, decompressing with Buddy H over late-night bites at The Standard Hotel before it closed, or staying up until dawn with Five Star and going down at least three different rabbit holes in one sitting.
