Near the main entrance, we have a new volunteer—young, Asian boy, he looks like he’s in high school.
The first time I saw him, I gave my usual “Good morning,” the same way I greet staff and patients. He smiled politely in return, and that was that.
The next day, he noticed the plushies hanging off my work bag and complimented me on them. I thanked him and quickly hopped into the elevator, making my usual escape up to my department.
Since then, he’s started this little routine: whenever he sees me approaching the building, he’ll quietly push the elevator button ahead of time so it’s ready by the time I get there. I always thank him. It’s such a small gesture, but very thoughtful. NGL, I’ll be a tiny bit sad when he’s done volunteering with us.
