I was watching Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke on Hulu—and all I can say is: WTF. It was heartbreaking to watch how the children were being treated.
And seriously, why are there so many true crime cases connected to Mormon communities? Murder Among the Mormons, Sins of Our Mother, Utah Cabin Murders, Abducted in Plain Sight, and more. Not to generalize, but damn.
I don’t know much about Mormonism beyond the basics: celestial chonies (aka garments), those pristine, castle-like temples, and that the folks I met at the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City were really polite. But watching these stories makes it hard not to question what’s going on behind the curtain, especially in cases where people use religion as a shield for control and abuse.
And the husband? Don’t even get me started. Completely passive. How do you sit back and watch your kids go through that and do nothing? I kept waiting for some explanation, some backstory, something—but he didn’t do a damn thing.
