happy anniversary

Currently listening to: Nothing Compares 2 U – Sinéad O’Connor

It’s been so lonely without you hereLike a bird without a songNothing can stop these lonely tears from fallingTell me baby where did I go wrongI could put my arms around every boy I seeBut they’d only remind me of youI went to the doctor and guess what he told meGuess what he told meHe said girl you better have funNo matter what you doBut he’s a fool
‘Cause nothing comparesNothing compares to you

Preface: … wait for me…

Big D and I have been tethered to each other since we were teenagers—an invisible thread that’s stretched, frayed, tangled, but never quite snapped. We came of age in Minnesota together, ran in the same circles, knew the same late-night diners, and built a mosaic of memories that quietly refused to fade with time.

Even now, as adults on different paths—he’s married, I’ve moved across cities, jobs, and social media platforms—we still talk. Our conversations are most often light—K-pop comebacks, skincare routines, which K-beauty product is actually worth it, and which K-drama wrecked our sleep schedule last.

And yet, every year, without fail, he’ll slide into my DMs with the same message: “Happy anniversary,” followed by a grainy screenshot from our Facebook archives—a relic from our inside joke days, a moment frozen in digital amber.

I don’t even get the reminders anymore. I disabled my Facebook a while ago and moved on to IG. But he never forgets. He keeps the flame alive in his own way.

And in that moment, I pause—just long enough to wonder if, in some parallel life, if it would have worked out if we ever got the timing right…

We haven’t seen my HS friend for seven years. She’s married, but she never forgets my birthday. I hope we get to see each other soon. Your bro sounds so cool, Rojie.

I love Sinead O’Connor!! Good choice!! She is awesome! So sad she is not with us! As far as that guy, maybe he wishes things to be different. That is why he is always popping up in your DM’s just saying.

I went and read the back and forth, and I feel as if you are sounding boards for each other- pivotal in that someone that really knows you for you is the only one that can really bring you back to center should it be needed and vice versa

Yeah, we are Def very honest with each other and I think that’s the greatest part of our friendship

I think those magical memories reside in a very specific time and space in our lives. I honestly have been tempted to revisit old relationships, but I fear that I’d taint that perfect memory.
