Currently listening to: Come Undone – Duran Duran

Words, playing me deja vu
Like a radio tune, I swear I’ve heard before
Chill, is it something real?
Or the magic I’m feeding off your fingers
Lost, in a snow filled sky
We’ll make it alright to come undone
Now we’ll try to stay blind to the hope and fear outside
Hey child, stay wilder than the wind and blow me in to cry

Today was a disaster of epic proportions, but I’m glad it is over with.

  • It started with a call from my mom. I picked up and only heard a man’s voice before it cut out. She called again, panicked, saying in Korean that she’d gotten into her first car accident just two minutes from my house. When I arrived, the guy involved was already on edge—accusing her of not cooperating, threatening to call the cops. I explained her English wasn’t the greatest and she was scared. Meanwhile, my insurance app wasn’t working, and I had to wake my agent—who’s in Korea for holiday—to send our policy info via e-mail or text.

The guy didn’t believe we were insured and called the cops anyway. Thankfully, the officer was calm and understanding. When the guy demanded my mom get cited for not having insurance, the officer shut it down. A minute later, I got the e-mail from my insurance agent and shared it with the male Karen. Then came the passive-aggressive lecture about paper copies and “digital dependence.” I smiled, thanked him for his thoughts and tariffs, and walked away. My mom was visibly shaken. She sat in the driveway for 30 minutes before coming inside, worried about premiums costs increasing. I told her none of that mattered—she was safe, and that’s what counts.

  • Later, I got my hair cut—asked for a wolf cut, but… it’s not giving wolf. Still, I chopped five inches. Shortest it’s been in a while. Good thing my hair grows fast. I’ll have to take a picture of it another time because you can’t really see it.

  • My friend texted me and said that she was in the ED for severe anemia. Her hemoglobin level was 5 g/dL. When it falls below 6.5 g/dL that’s when heart failure begins and can lead to death. I know that she has anemia like I do and I told her on Thursday that she was looking pale and that she needed to go to the ED to get a transfusion but she laughed it off. I offered to share my iron supplements but she brushed it aside. I really don’t know why people don’t listen to me… but nevertheless, I’m glad that they raised her level to at least a 7 g/dL but it’s not substantial enough.
  • I’ve been busy filing the insurance claim and locating a repair shop for my mom’s car.
  • I was running errands for my mom since she was out of commission. I went to Trader Joe’s, which is a grocery store reasonably priced sorta similar to Aldi (same parent company btw), and noticed the prices on foreign cheese had skyrocketed. What the fuck? I am gonna miss my New Zealand and Italian cheeses. Who wants domestic cheese? But I guess this is what I’m going to be eating. Fucking thoughts and tariffs ain’t going to save us.

I also saw that the supplies were dwindling, usually the foods are overflowing with products and that made me pause for concern. This is actually happening. Annoyingly, they did not have any salsa and barely had any pico de gallo.

  • I’ve been lowkey stockpiling because of the tariffs, recent price hikes, and dismal amount of shipments coming through the ports here in SoCal. I bought large quantities of coffee, toilet paper, batteries (AA and AAA), paper towels, soap, shampoo, vitamins, OTC meds, conditioner, body wash, olive oil, detergent, vinegar, rice, nuts, lentils, beans, pasta sauce, gluten free noods, hot sauce, and toothpaste.  Perishable items like vegetables and ground beef, I’m cutting them up into smaller portions and storing them in my freezer. I’m getting flashbacks of 2020 when everyone was buying up all sorts of shit.
  • I had my vision examination scheduled for today. I almost cancelled it but I figured I better buy my contacts and glasses now before the prices go up for those too. I hate that air puff test that they do to measure intraocular pressure. I know it’s important but my damn eyes want to blink all the time. I told the woman administering the test that I’ve got a blinking problem, which is true, anytime someone comes near my eyes, it starts blinking like mad. My vision has remained the same luckily, so I ordered a year’s worth of contacts and decided to not to indulge in getting a new pair of glasses.
  • I had to cancel on my friend’s Karaoke party Sunday night. I was strangely looking forward to it but I just had too much unfinished business at home, taxi my mom to run errands, and didn’t want to be on the struggle bus for the rest of the week.

I am glad your mom is all right after the car accident. Hopefully she can get it restored quickly. I am sorry about your friend not taking your advice, but at least she is doing all right. I like your hair cut. It makes you look fabulous. Those tariffs are terrible. I hope the tariffs don’t cause other countries we depend on for food to start holding back on us. It is good that you stock piled on the items you bought because you never know.

You just never know, Jesse. I hope things get better with this global trade impacting everyone. Thank you for the well wishes!!

You did have a DAY! I am so glad you were there for your mom. I wish people like that ignoramus man did not exist, but since they do, did you really thank him for the tariffs!? God, I hope so!

    1. justrojie Avatar

Yes I did since he was such a Karen 😆 the cop was right there too

glad Mom is ok. and yes, being safe and ok is all that counts. hope she can get back to driving sooner than later with a repaired ride.

we’ve got 2 to 3 weeks before port of LA and LB start seeing significantly less boats and 5 to 7 after that until someone caves and starts making formal deals.

    1. justrojie Avatar

Ugh till then the retailers can jack up the prices…

Gah–what a day! I’m glad everyone is ok (using a very relaxed definition of “ok”). I fear those pics of the shelves at TJ’s are a sign of things to come for a long time…

P.S. I had to google “wolf cut”–that’s how out of touch I am with the world of hair.

    1. justrojie Avatar

It was a day! Thankfully today was much better. I am so glad that she is a doing better today too. The shelves are just a forewarning I feel like. Hah! Any thoughts on the wolf cut in general?

      1. Joe Avatar

It’s honestly hard to tell from the photo whether you got a wolf cut or not–you look darling as usual, but I don’t really have a good sense of your haircut!

Wow Rojie, quite the day! Too bad about the Karen, guess there will always be jerks like that.

Love the new ‘do! Very cool 😎

Concerning about your friend. Have they ever ID’d the cause of her anemia? Maybe an EGD and/or colonoscopy?

Hope the rest of your weekend is less stressful. If you need a karaoke fix, most songs on YT have the karaoke versions… you can play them through BT and sing as you drive hither and yon 😂 🎶

I’ve been thinking of getting one of those wireless mics to sync with those YouTube vids! My friend has had anemia since she gave birth to her children a decade ago. She did have an endoscopy and colonoscopy but it was clear. It could be that she has heavy menses or like me born with it.

Aldi and trader joe’s are my go-to’s for affordable and good quality foods, and yes, prices are astronomical! Come Undone is one of my all-time favorite songs.

    1. justrojie Avatar

😩 the prices are you wild. Come undone is sooo good!

  12. ibarynt Avatar

That was quite a scare for your mom, glad to know she’s safe.
Does it feel like you’re stocking up for the apocalypse. We’ve stopped buying certain veggies since last year because bloody inflation.

    1. justrojie Avatar

I’m about to move to a farm if this keeps up

      1. ibarynt Avatar

We’ll need to all do that eventually.

Poor Mom! What a scary thing to have a car accident. Thankfully, you could be there and help her.

Wolf cuts are cute! It is hard to see yours in the pic, but your photo is really cute!

Thanks for the reminder to stock up. I’ve noticed some empty shelves but didn’t think too much about it. Some items might not be coming back! Yikes!

    Do you sing? Karaoke?

    1. justrojie Avatar

Most Koreans sing at places called norae bang, which is like karaoke but in your own private room where you can eat and drink too! Hope you were able to get some shopping in before it goes outta stock.
