It was always burning since the world’s been turning
We didn’t start the fire
No, we didn’t light it, but we’re trying to fight it
The three massive fires are still burning. The National Guard Soldiers and other first responders are still battling the flames. It’s moved away from where I live but it’s inching its way closer to a few of my friends’ residence.
Last week, I was awarded a plaque, a small silver starfish, and a pin at work. It was bittersweet because I’ll be working with a new team soon. I’m transferring to another unit but at least I get to keep my assistants.
I was offered the job that I interviewed for and then I kindly declined it. It wasn’t for me but I already knew that.
Sometimes, when I’m at work, I feel like I’m in that movie “300”.
I want to scream loudly and say…
This.
Is.
Sparta!
But we know damn well that I can’t, although I enjoy picturing it in my head.
Once upon a time, there was a man walking on the beach.
He looked down the beach and saw a dancer. As he got closer, he noticed it was a young man, reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.
He came closer still and called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”
The young man paused, looked up, and replied, “Throwing starfish into the ocean.” “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” asked the somewhat startled wise man.
To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up, and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”
Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, “But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”
At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, “It made a difference for that one.”
