911, what’s your emergency?

Create an emergency preparedness plan.

I really don’t have one.

You would think that I would have a plan after everyone in the neighborhood was evacuated due to the fires during covid… but nope. For nearly a week, we stayed at a hotel and ate at various restaurants. I had to go to Walmart and buy scrubs, underwear/bras, and go to Costco to get my contact lenses. I left work with what I had on my back. I wasn’t allowed to go home because the police were blocking all the entry points.

Growing up in the Midwest, we were taught at an early age to duck and cover whenever a tornado struck the area. When there were blizzards, we had a backpack full of blankets, canned foods, flashlight + batteries, kitty litter, and a shovel.

The only emergency preparedness plan that I have is for active shooters on campus. It’s one that we are trained for annually at work. I recall writing about an incident onsite from a previous post, who am i?

We’ve had quite a few of earthquakes lately and I can feel the building rumbling. By the time I think of getting under a desk, the shaking has stopped. The last earthquake I felt was a couple of days ago, I was with a patient and as soon as the building started to roll, he began to cry. He was so frightened by it. I was trying to comfort him and before we knew it, it was over.

I grew up with earthquakes. I’ve become desensitized by them. I know by the mere fact that I typed that, I risk the chance of causing a big one to hit.

Wow. During COVID-19, it seems like your restrictions were even stricter than ours. You really enforced protective measures and protocols diligently.

I hope you stay safe during the earthquakes. I know they’re unpredictable, but all you can do is try to be as safe as possible.

Wow, you’ve been through a lot. It’s interesting how each region has its own challenges. I can’t imagine how tough it must be to experience earthquakes while trying to comfort others. You’re handling it all so well. I hope things calm down soon and that you stay safe.
