How do you deal with haters?

To be honest, I’ve learned to take it as a backhanded compliment. I’ve also realized that if someone’s taking the time to hate, it usually says more about them than it does about me. A lot of the time, people project their own insecurities, frustrations, or unhappiness onto others.
I’ve had patients call me every racial slur in the book and tell me to go back to my country. I try not to take it personally. I’m used to this, having grown up in the Midwest.
But when I was in junior high, I’d tell my tormentors to go back to Europe but that only enraged them even more, which I was subjected to more agonizing torture. It was me versus the whole lot of them.
Sometimes, I even take it as a quiet sign that I’m doing something right. When you’re growing, evolving, or just living in a way that’s true to yourself, it can make others uncomfortable—especially if they haven’t found that peace for themselves.
TBH, I don’t like confrontation. I usually just keep my distance. I don’t respond, I don’t engage. I let it pass. I figure people will always have opinions, and not all of them are worth listening to. Energy is precious, and I’d rather spend mine on the people and things that actually matter.
At the end of the day, I remind myself of who I am and what I value. I try to stay grounded, grateful, and focused. Everything else is just noise—and I don’t let noise distract me.
