What’s the hardest decision you’ve ever had to make? Why?

  • putting down my cat due to complications of ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome). Prognosis of her making it overnight were so low that the emergency vet gave me no hope.
  • putting my dog down after fifteen years. She survived brain and mouth tumors, torn ACL, degenerative disc disease, and chronic pain. I had the best pet insurance possible at the time.Β  She had seven doctors, underwent chemotherapy and radiation, surgeries, and acupuncture. At the end, she was tired and even though I wasn’t ready for her to go, I didn’t want her to suffer…
  • withdrawing life support when my dad was in a coma. DFLST (decision to forgo life sustaining therapy) was made by my mom and I. There were no signs of life, the EEG showed no brain activity. It was an irreversible coma.Β

I have so many over my lifetime, so could not site one. I to have to put down loving pets. Give up things or people close to my heart, and it was hard not following my daughter to her new university town to ensure she would be okay. She survived fine without me. Each time I say goodbye, it is hard for me, because we do not know what tomorrow will bring, or if even there will be a tomorrow. My life has not been easy but I have survived but one of the hardest was having a heart attack a year ago the day after Thanksgiving, and my daughter saved my life, along with others. I stayed alert, or rather present until I was placed upon the examination table by the emergency medical staff, then I was gone, but the fear in others eyes has stayed with me. I obviously survived, but it was close because I have an allergy to some pain medicines, which they use during surgery. They tried without them, but finally made the decision to take a chance with one, and I survived. Each decision I have made has been made with thoughts of choices before me. I have survived.

Whoah I’m so glad that you survived and that you’re a fighter! Thank you so much for sharing your story. I am in complete awe. I hope you have a safe Thanksgiving and that you and your family are able to enjoy the day.
