I have a love-hate relationship with collaborating with others. It starts the same way every time, ever since—high school, uni, work, it really doesn’t matter—I end up holding the bag while the rest of the team checks out. By the final week, other groups are on their third or fourth revision. Everything has been polished, rehearsed, and in the mean while, I’m still cobbling together the slide deck and the infographics by myself. I can feel the resentment building up with every unanswered text/e-mail. I’ve hounded down my teammates about our assigned parts, tried to coordinate a scheduled meeting together, but I get disappointed every time: they didn’t finish their part and I’m scrambling at the eleventh hour trying to fix it and complete their portion of the assigned part.
It’s gotten to the point where I’d catch myself wishing I could just be a one-woman team instead. At least then I know exactly what to expect. I don’t have to chase people down, I don’t have to wait till the last minute to turn the group project in, be annoyed that things didn’t get done in a timely manner, nor do I have to be PC about stupid ideas or bullshit excuses.
Now a days, because of my busy schedule, I feel like I am the flake now. My free time is pretty limited and my schedule is packed till the end of the year. I can feel myself becoming the person I used to resent in group projects and TBH, it’s quite humbling.
If I could pick my dream collaborator, it’d be with BTS… any of them. I love them all, but if I had to choose, I’d want to work with RM (although he’s not my bias or bias wrecker), because he writes so much of their English lyrics and he’s one of the rappers in the rap line. I know, I know… it’s pure delulu, but a girl can dream, right?
