I don’t know who she was and I don’t think I ever will. What I can say is that I’ve neer been able to forget what happened to her.

I was in high school, staying with my grandmother in the motherland. Our family finished lunch in Seoul, and we were headed back to her home in Incheon. We stopped at a red light and a woman was crossing the road.

In the lane next to us, a driver kept coming… full steam ahead. He didn’t even bother to slow down at all.

He hit her and her groceries exploded into the air and scattered across the street right in front of us. I witnessed her limp body flipping at least twice in the air before she came down on the pavement, face first.

And that asshole just kept going…

I wanted to cry for her and yet at the same moment, I was on the verge of vomiting from the horrific scene I just saw. I asked if we should stay, if we should give a statement to the police, or even check if she was still alive. Maybe we could save her, maybe it wasn’t too late. But nobody answered me. The light turned green and our driver rolled forward like nothing happened.

I couldn’t understand how people could watch someone who is badly injured and just… drive away? How can people treat each other so shitty?
