You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So, when we found that we could not make sense
Well, you said that we would still be friends
But I’ll admit that I was glad it was over

What has your experiences taught you about the healthcare system?

The healthcare system is a maze and there’s no one helping navigate this ginormous system of care for anyone. Including myself. Don’t even get me started with the in-network, out-of-network, deductibles, co-insurance, prior authorizations, and what not.

People can go to a local hospital that is in-network with their insurance and have an operation by an in-network surgeon but can get a nasty bill because the anesthesiologist is an out-of-network provider. The No Surprises Act was supposed to clear this confusion for people but if you don’t know about it, how can you push back?

Just because a physician orders a medication doesn’t mean that you’ll be able to get the medication, especially if it’s a non-formulary medication. Meaning that it’s not the cheaper, usually prescribed drug. To get the newer and often times more costly medication, paperwork needs to be completed to justify why that particular medication is needed. This could take days to weeks for the health plan to respond back and often times, there is a lot of back and forth between the doctor’s office and the insurance.

Most non-profit hospitals are required by law to offer some type of temporary financial assistance. People don’t really know about it unless they specifically ask. Whenever I have a patient who tells me about their financial constraints, I’m quick to give them the number to call to see if they are eligible (family income at or below 400% of the federal poverty guideline and high medical costs).

From reading different blogs I can’t remember where you live. But for my US friends I know that it can become complicated. That what you describe is just awful. It’s awful to receive a bill like that. You shouldn’t get surprises like that.

Over here where I am in the UK it’s different. Although the NHS gives the impression to be free because you can just go into hospital when you receive your appointment after the doctor has referred you and won’t face any costs other than any prescription charges (if you pay for prescriptions and don’t get them free) when you come out. We all pay for the NHS in a way because we pay national insurance contributions from our wages and income tax. And both these fund the NHS as well as VAT. The NHS is a public funded hospital.

The NHS system has been slowly changing. Including doctors surgeries. So, I think it may seem confusing for some or most people.

Like my latest experience was getting a routine blood test. Before, I could just walk in to my doctor’s surgery and request a blood test and get one done there. But now, I have to fill in a form online, on my doctors website. Then wait and see if I have to have an appointment first with a doctor, or whether it gets accepted or declined.
In my case it got accepted and I had to go elsewhere local for the blood to be taken for the blood test. It wasn’t done at my doctor’s practice where my blood was taken like before.

Making an appointment to see your doctor is all done online. You can’t walk in and make one. So, I know there are going to be older people and those not good with technology to struggle with that.
