I’m the opposite of moderate, immaculately polished with
The spirit of a hustler and the swagger of a college kid
Allergic to the counterfeit, impartial to the politics
Articulate, but still I’ll grab a n—- by the collar quick
If my life had chapters, what would this one be called?

For most of my life, I have placed myself second. My decisions and choices were determined by the needs, expectations, and comfort of others, believing that consideration was the same as virtue. I waited. And waited. By doing so, I learned how to be dependable, mindful, and overly cautious.
Now, I’m choosing myself.
I’m going to do all the things that I’ve been avoiding AND wanting to do. I am at the gate, ready to launch.
I can do it without sacrificing my integrity. I can care deeply for others and still choose myself. I can stop feeling guilty for wanting more. I can be unapologetic.
I’ve held myself back because I was taught to. This is the way, I’m told. The Korean way. I was raised to consider the collective before myself. Family first. Community always. Be grateful. Do good better. Be humble. Don’t be a show boat. Don’t rock the boat.
Do.
The.
Right.
Thing.
And if there aren’t any chairs at the table, I won’t beg for a seat… I’ll build my own damn table.
