When I was in elementary school and junior high, I was almost always reading. I’d prop a book open at the dinner table, sneak pages between bites, or read quietly on the sofa while my parents were watching their K-dramas.
When it was time for bed, I would read until my parents turned off the lights. Little did they know, I kept a flashlight underneath my pillow. As soon as I heard them walk back to their room and lock their bedroom door, I’d grab the flashlight and turn it on. I’d keep reading into the wee hours and finish the chapter I was reading.
Long after the lights were out and I finished reading for the night, I was still wide awake. Reading was my way of escaping reality and the fantasies that I would conjure up in my head were remarkable.
