expect the unexpected

Currently listening to: Imma Be – The Black Eyed Peas

I’mma be on the next level
I’mma be rockin’ over that bass treble
I’mma be chillin’ with my motherfuckin’ crew
I’mma be makin’ all them deals you wanna do (Ha)
I’mma be up in them A-list flicks
Doin’ one-handed flips
Then I’mma be sippin’ on trip ’cause
I’mma be shakin’ my hips
You gon’ be lickin’ your lips
I’mma be takin’ them pics
Lookin’ all fly and shit
I’mma be the flyest chick (So fly)
I’mma be spreadin’ my wings

Is there something being expected by you (by society, family) that you wish wasn’t?

Prompt snagged from: TCMC

Portraiture of me. Artist: Sun

Korean society, in particular, has a pretty extensive checklist of expectations:

  • highly educated with a prestigious job
  • values intellectual conversations but also knows when to hold her tongue
  • be elegant and feminine but not too loud about it
  • use proper honorifics
  • be deeply respectful
  • be family-oriented
  • maintain clean hygiene and look polished
  • stay romantically open but not too open
  • be slim
  • have a good sense of style

American society feels simpler in comparison:

  • be a functional member of society — work, pay taxes, vote, serve on jury duty when called
  • get that bag… if I wanna
  • be different than everyone else
  • take care of myself and keep boundaries
  • make your mark in this world
  • and don’t be a bag of dicks

American lifestyle sounds practical, and Korean sounds meticulous, but still good.

Hey, just to mention, before your wonderful picture,

In the WP reader this pops up,
    [caption id="attachment_3871" align="aligncenter" width="219"]

Ignore if that was intentional haha. But just thought of popping in here

😂 thanks I’m using a different editor for wp and it does that sometimes. Idk why it does that since it’s the older version cause I can’t stand elementor

I think the Korean style sounds harder, but I also think it churns out more well-rounded and well-balanced people with their priorities in place (unless I’m wrong and it creates too much stress).

Our American style seems all over the map.

It’s very much based on Confucianism and Buddhism philosophies. Family rites and cultural and social norms. Whereas in America, individualism is celebrated and encouraged. Korea thinks of the greater good for society and family.

Forgot to say … I love the portraiture of you! Really pretty!

Thank you!! This Korean artist I befriended drew that for me

If you’re looking for respect, both approaches are hard work, just different. Though I think the Korean approach, if I’m honest, is a lot more work and has more consequences for failure.

Either way, I don’t envy the tightrope you’re walking.

Being Korean is harder. More scrutinizing and higher expectations. That’s probably the reason for the high suicide rate.

Yeah, you were under way more pressure from your parents than I ever was. I know they do it out of a place of love, but man, the damage they can unintentionally inflict…

        1. justrojie Avatar

Emotional damage every day and that’s why my mom triggers me 😆

That “emotional damaaage!” guy on YouTube suddenly makes way more sense.

          2. justrojie Avatar

            He’s hilarious

Yeah. Every once in a while, we’ll watch a bunch of his shorts. But now, there’s an underlying tone of misery I’d been completely oblivious to. Thanks. 😉

          4. justrojie Avatar

Ahh I haven’t watched much of his stuff

If he heard that, it would cause him … emotional damage.

Lol the Cultural differences are killing me , In India , I am supposed to have long hairs( I have short) , wear traditional attires ( I don’t ) , learn to cook, to listen to every thing a elder say , even those old persons are respected ( who should not be ), never cry , be a people’ s pleaser etc , no doubt our culture is nice about and more about respect but sometimes I think it is sometimes kinda toxic specially being a girl .

    1. justrojie Avatar

It’s hard to fit in the mold society wants us to be in

        Yeah !

I have to say that I am really glad I was not born into a society that expected a lot out of me- I never would have made the grade!

😂 I think I’d be at a d+ right now if I was being graded
