I’d like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay awake when I’m asleep
‘Cause everything is never as it seems
It’s Friday. TGIF.
It was National Donut Day, and my assistants brought donuts to work. They also grabbed me two Vietnamese coffees: one hot, one iced. I already had my own cup of coffee earlier, I was going to be on a good one soon enough.
I was wired AF. I was moving at Mach 10, sending off e-mails, crushing my to-do list, and talking a 100 miles a minute. I have never been that productive in my life. I think my keyboard is still recovering.
After work, I met up with Barbara, who handed me my birthday gift—a gift I technically bought for myself. It was a full case of the new Labubu’s (retail price, not the resell, thank you very much). Her friend’s dad had gone to Thailand, picked up a bunch of cases, and shipped them over. I’ll do an unboxing on IG stories later this week. I’m not keeping them all to myself, I’m actually giving a few a way to my friends to give to their daughters. They’ve been trying to get their hands on one that isn’t going to cost them double the retail value.
Then we ended up going to a Chinese restaurant I’d been meaning to try. The plaza was packed—as usual—because everyone’s out here trying to get their Asian food fix, and the parking situation is a nightmare.
Mapo tofu with rice – It had pork, which I usually avoid, but I have to admit… it was pretty solid.
Scallion pancakes – A little too greasy for my taste. Pass.
Hand-pulled noodles with beef and veggies – The noodles were chewy and well-textured. The beef and veg? Standard, nothing to write home about, but good enough.
Fish and shrimp egg rolls – Yes, more fried food (le sigh). But they were actually delicious. No regrets.
After dinner, we walked over to Sul & Bean for some shaved ice with injeolmi (인절미- roasted soybean mochi). We split the bowl and talked for another hour before heading home.
When I got back, I checked my work e-mails, replied to a few, and then got a text about a consulting gig. After going over the details, I think I’ll take it. It’s going to take time, sure—but it’s extra cash, and I’m not in a position to say no to that right now.
I’ve started buying Christmas gifts early and other necessities, economists are saying that in quarter three and four, the country will be heading into a recession. Stores have already marked up their prices in anticipation to the additional tariffs that will go into effect in July.
