It may sound absurd but don’t be naïve
Even heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed but won’t you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream
And it’s not easy to be me
What is a foreign dish you would like to try?

Martabak Manis. I actually found out about this gem from another blogger on WP and then I went down this rabbit hole looking up the different types they had. It’s an Indonesian street food that comes in two versions: sweet and savory. It’s almost like a thick, fluffy pancake stuffed with all kinds of fillings, folded like a sandwich, and cut into squares. Glorious.
The closest place near me that serves it is in West Covina at Martabak Café. They only do the sweet version, but they seem to do it really well. Based on reviews, you have to place your order a day in advance, and they’re closed from Sunday through Tuesday. That means my best shot at trying it is either on a Saturday or if I manage to snag a random day off. And yeah, they’re a little on the pricier side, nearly $30 for I believe 8 slices, but it’s supposed to be one of the most authentic spots in SoCal offering this.
Even though I’m not really a sweets person, I already know what I want to try. The pandan, chocolate, and peanut combo sounds amazing. I’m also eyeing their “Triple C” which has cashews, chocolate, and cheese. Cheese. I love cheese. I’m not sure what kind of cheese they use but I’m going with it. They even offer a durian version, but I’m still on the fence about durian in general.
I definitely don’t want to know how many carbs, grams of sugar, or calories this has because it’s bound to be a lot, just from the ingredients listed in making it. I will report back once I try it. If you’ve had it before, let me know what your thoughts are on Martabak Manis.
