Currently watching: Hey Beautiful: Anatomy of a Romance Scam on Hulu
By now, most of us have heard about the infamous Nigerian scammers. But what I didn’t know was that there’s a specific group called the Yahoo Boys. They have been running romance scams for years. In this particular docuseries, they were using a gay man’s photos to seduce and scam older women who were just looking for connection.
Millions of dollars were sent to this completely fabricated being. These women were led to believe they had found love, only to be emotionally devastated and financially gutted. It’s heartbreaking when you think about it. They weren’t naïve—they were just lonely. They wanted someone to talk to, to care for, to be seen. Instead, they got catfished, deepfaked, manipulated, and left with nothing but heartache, shame, and empty bank accounts.
So yeah—stay vigilant, folks. The world can be a piece of shit sometimes.
PSA on cyber security on WP.
Side bar: someone recently tried to log into my WordPress site—again. Not the first time, and probably not the last. Honestly, this happens more often than I’d like to admit from different bots, people, and countries, and it never stops being unsettling. Over the years since having previous blogs, I’ve learned to take this seriously. People are constantly trying to hack into blogs, social media accounts, emails, bank accounts—anything with a password basically.
I use Wordfence and other plugins. Wordfence is solid—they offer both free and premium versions—and it does a good job blocking sketchy IP addresses and scanning for malware. It gives me just enough peace of mind to sleep at night, knowing I’m at least making it harder for these digital cockgobblers to get in.
Do your research, protect your stuff, and don’t wait until something gets compromised to take it seriously. Whether you’re a blogger, business owner, or someone just casually posting online, remember: if it’s online, it’s vulnerable. I’m not trying to make anyone paranoid but I just want people to be aware.
Stay safe out there friends—emotionally and digitally.
Doing my best,
rojie
