I found my old UMich shirt today—the one I picked up during a trip to Michigan a while back—and it instantly brought back memories of this guy I used to know. He was Indian, studying at the University of Michigan, and for some reason, he always came to me for advice about his Korean girlfriend.
At first, I thought it was cool. I love seeing different cultures come together, and I was all for the interracial/ethnic mix. But then, our conversations would inevitably spiral into heated debates over which university was superior—Minnesota or Michigan.
We literally had arguments about whether U of M stood for Minnesota or Michigan. Yes. I cannot make this up.
Obviously, my vote was for Minnesota. I spent most of my life there, and it’s where I went to school. Ann Arbor is nice but it isn’t Minneapolis, that’s for damn fucking sure. But this dude was relentless, insisting that Michigan was objectively better. We would go back and forth about this for hours, neither of us willing to back down.
But the real kicker? The moment he tried to out-Korean me.
Like… what? Sir, how? Just because he was dating a Korean girl and could throw around a few Korean words, he suddenly thought he had Korean expertise on lock. He really had the audacity to act like he knew the culture better than me. That would be like me trying to out-Indian him just because I love Indian food and have Indian friends. Like… no matter how much butter chicken I eat or Bollywood movies I watch, I cannot claim a deeper knowledge of Indian culture than someone who actually is Indian. That’s simply absurd.
I eventually stopped talking to him because he was working my nerves. LOL. SMH.
