This week was a whirlwind of birthday celebrations—three in total, one of which belonged to Five Star. But what do you get for someone who already has everything or can buy whatever she wants? I was at a loss. After some thought, I decided to keep it simple yet indulgent: a bottle of champagne, delivered straight to her doorstep at 0800. Because if you’re going to celebrate, you might as well start early.
I know, I know—it wasn’t a vintage like Dom Pérignon, and to a true champagne connoisseur, it might have been basic. But I’m not a bubbly drinker, and she is. I figured her other friends would shower her with exquisite wines, so my gesture was more about the sentiment than the label.
She was hosting a grand birthday dinner at an upscale restaurant with a prix fixe menu, and while it sounded lovely, I opted out on this one. After a long week, the idea of dressing up and socializing felt more exhausting than celebratory. I needed to decompress, to sit in my own space, in my own quiet, and just be. Last weekend had been a blur of activity, and this time, I wanted solitude.
