Currently listening to: Heaven Is A Place On Earth – Belinda Carlisle

Ooh, baby, do you know what that’s worth?Ooh, Heaven is a place on EarthThey say in Heaven, love comes firstWe’ll make Heaven a place on EarthOoh, Heaven is a place on Earth
When I feel aloneI reach for you, and you bring me homeWhen I’m lost at seaI hear your voice, and it carries me

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard by now about the anglerfish (smaller than the palm of a hand) that surfaced near Spain. If you haven’t, then please Google it.  Normally, these deep-sea dwellers remain miles beneath the surface, shrouded in eternal darkness, navigating their world with the eerie glow of the bioluminescent lure attached to their heads. But this particular female anglerfish defied the odds, rising from the abyss (for days? weeks?) and finally glimpsing natural light for the first time.

Anglerfish have one of the most bizarre and haunting mating rituals in the animal kingdom. The males are tiny in comparison to the females, their sole purpose in life being to find a mate. Once they do, they use their sharp little teeth to bite into the female’s body. They become completely dependent on her for nutrition and fuse with her, their organs slowly dissolving until they become nothing more than a pair of testicles pumping semen. Some females carry multiple male remnants—ghostly traces of past encounters—attached to them for life.

Yet, despite the weight of these parasitic bonds, the female anglerfish continues on, hunting, surviving, glowing. And this particular one did something extraordinary—she rose.

Maybe she was searching for something more. Maybe she was simply lost.  Maybe she was running away from the effects of climate change, global warming, or marine pollution.

I’m going with this though… without realizing it, she became a symbol—of resilience, of breaking through the darkness, of seeking light despite the depths that try to hold you down.

Never let anyone dim your fucking light. Not the deep sea. Not the parasites. Not anything that tries to keep you from rising.

Love,

rojie XOXO
