shut up, sit down, and read

gambit

Even though it came out in 2020, it still was probably one of the best mini series from Netflix that I’ve seen.

I don’t know how to play chess but it did pique my interest about the game.  My cousin used to teach children how to play the game.  She wasn’t a grandmaster but she was pretty damn good.

Without giving too much away, the story is about Eliza(beth) Harmon, who’s learned how to play chess by the orphanage building custodian.  She had the talent to visualize (spatial intelligence) how to best place the pieces on the board, which catapults her to winning chess tournaments and becoming a prodigy.  But even with all of the recognition and being a decorated chess player, she suffered from perfectionist obsession, addiction, and mental health issues. All seven episodes are a work of art, it was aesthetically beautiful.  The visual effects and music enhanced the series.  Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance was on point.
