gather around

Currently listening to:  Someday We’ll Know– New Radicals

Someday we’ll know
Why Sampson loved Delilah
One day I’ll go
Dancing on the moon
Someday you’ll know
That I was the one for you

Over Thanksgiving, we (my brother, cousins, and I) were laughing about a saying when we were younger.

Grades:

A is for acceptable
B is for bad
C is for can’t eat dinner
D is for don’t come home
F is for find a new family

It was funny but at the same time, it wasn’t.  That’s the kind of scrutiny we were under growing up when it came to school. The high academic expectation was and still is real.

There was a lot of pressure to excel in everything since my parents risked it all to come to America so that I could have a better life (or so they say, because quite honestly, I think I would have been fine in the motherland regardless, although I have to admit that the opportunities here are endless).  At least that’s what they told me 10921289234 million times.

    I loved your post–thanks!

I can tell my students–actually, I do tell my students–that they are confusing the act of education with the act of accumulating a bunch of meaningless letters on a meaningless piece of paper. But I know my protests are a fool’s errand: the letters are meaningful to them because the students and their parents assign meaning to them. I continue to believe that grading is the most anti-educational thing we do to our students.

It definitely hinders creativity and those letters won’t mean a thing later on in life either!
